YMMV / The Painter

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The Painter's portraits of their victims are all drawn in excruciatingly gruesome detail, having an air of distorted realism that plunges them past the Uncanny Valley and straight into Nightmare Fuel.
  • Bile Fascination: The series became quickly controversial on the Internet, due to the excessive shock factor, the lack of actual characters and the plot not going beyond of "evil dude doing evil shit", with some calling it "the worst Analog Horror series". The result is one of the most (in)famous horror series on Youtube.
  • Memetic Loser: The police, particularly since the series doesn't seem to be intentionally invoking Police Are Useless. The habit of their investigators getting brutally murdered and the sheer lack of progress they are making towards finding the killers in spite of the mountains of physical and forensic evidence they findnote  has led to a lot of confusion and jokes about their supposed investigative competency.
  • Narm: While the Painter's art can be unsettling, the fact that the images presented as "photographs" are also some of the creator's digital paintings makes it hard to maintain the verisimilitude and realism the series aims for.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The fact that the lack of characterization on both the victims and the murderers, the ludicrous nature of the murders and the police's utter inability to have a lead on the antagonists may make some viewers find them too silly to actually be invested in the series, with jokes online making fun of the number of stabbings and mutilation that come across as overkill and some saying it's more like a parody rather than an actual serious attempt at creating horror. The fact that the painting titles are occasionally bad puns doesn't really help. Videos like Nightern's and some parodies laugh at the formulaic nature of the series and over-reliance on shock factor over characterization/worldbuilding.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The series is somewhat controversial online for its poor handling of darker subject matter, as well as its creator reacting poorly to criticism on Twitter, usually resorting to insults and bullying; even going to the point to posting Flame Bait on his account saying that "the painter is a comedy." It got so bad that he had a meltdown after Pastra (a popular analyst of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise on YouTube) called him out, saying that "just because extreme horror doesn't fit in your little autistic furry horror taste doesn't mean that there isn't a place for it. Use your platform to talk about things you like instead of shitting on actual creators, cunt." leading to the account for the analogue horror series Chezz Kids Archive to break character and tell the creator to go fuck himself and the account of Martin Walls, the creator of The Walten Files, which rarely even used Twitter in the first place sent a mocking meme towards the creator.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Uncommon for an Analog Horror, this one has a much more realistic setting. No aliens, no ghosts, no demons, no incomprehensible horrors beyond the human mind, no apparent supernatural or paranormal entities whatsoever. It's just a very sick person doing very, very sick things to others... at least, as far as the police know. Of course, that doesn't make it any less disturbing. In fact, that's one of the aspects makes the series so frightening compared to others in its genre: something like this could (or even possibly have had) happen in real life.
  • Shock Fatigue: Every new episode pushes as far as possible to be as disgusting and horrific as possible... with no real purpose or goal beyond that. With each attempt to top the previous panoply of extreme content, the series loses still more of its impact.
  • Signature Scene: For both its fans and detractors, the Fucktoy Cory painting and its context exemplifies the series' sensibilities very succinctly.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A serial killer who draws paintings based on their victims is a genuinely interesting premise for a horror story. Although the execution is largely considered lackluster due to aforementioned issues of lack of any real characters, overreliance on cheap shock factor and the narrative having little to no progress over the span of the series.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Eight episodes into the series, the plot hadn't made much progress, with the killers still being at large and continuing their murder spree. This has caused a few viewers, even those who were fans of the series, to lose interest when the only changes from video to video seeming to be how gruesome the murders get.
