YMMV / The Muppets at Walt Disney World

Go To

  • Designated Villain: The guard is the bad guy because he wants to capture the Muppets for breaking into the park without paying. He's also had some bad luck with his job before, such as losing many important keys, and is on his last chance, and at one point mentions if he messes up again he'll have to scrape gum off benches. He eventually does capture them, but once he learns that Kermit is friends with Mickey, the Muppets are out of trouble, while the guard knows he's in trouble, and in the closing number is shown scraping gum off a bench, even though he was just doing his job.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Mickey Mouse welcoming Kermit to the family. At the time this was produced, Jim Henson had made a preliminary agreement to sell his company to Disney, and they were still negotiating the final terms. The whole deal fell through when he died shortly after the special aired, and Disney would not own the Muppets until 2004.
    • No one knew it at the time, but this would be the final Muppet project with all of the classic performers in place, with Henson dying just a few months after it was taped, and Richard Hunt dying in January of 1992.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The Muppets enter the park through the MGM Studios gate, which is the spot where most Muppet attractions are at the theme park today, most notably Muppet*Vision 3D. Many unproduced Muppet attractions were going to be part of that area as well.
    • One of the rides Beauregard drags Miss Piggy onto is Star Tours. Disney would eventually acquire both the Muppets and Lucasfilm.note  Also notable is that Star Wars now boxes in Grand Avenue (where most of the current Muppets attractions are located), with Star Tours on one side and Galaxy's Edge on the other.
  • Memetic Mutation: "I don't believe in violence..."
  • Unintentional Period Piece: This special reflects Walt Disney World as it was in 1990, meaning, amongst other things, only three parks are shown (Animal Kingdom would not open for another eight years), Hollywood Studios still goes by its former name, Disney-MGM Studios, former attractions such as the Wonders of Life pavilion and the original Star Tours are shown and the old pre-1996 Walt Disney World logo is featured numerous times.
