YMMV / The Caligula Effect 2

Go To

  • Broken Base: The game focuses on an entirely new cast, with no one from the first game returning or even getting mentioned (barring Mu, Aria, Wicked, and Thorn. One group thinks the second Go-Home Club are interesting and worthy successors to their predecessors, and the other thinks they aren't quite up to snuff. Marie Amabuki AKA Wicked is the sole exception to this.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: By the time of the reveal, many fans already pegged that Marie Amabuki is an amnesiac Wicked, mainly due to her Catharsis Effect awakening being triggered not by her memories in the real world but how she feels she's heard of the Go-Home Club before and her having the same VA as Wicked. Even those who haven't picked up on the earlier clues will realize who she is during Chapter 6 when the Go-Home Club hears Marie raving about something in a way that sounds very much like Wicked.
  • Continuity Lockout: The circumstances revolving around Marie Amabuki, especially the reveal of her having a Micro Mobius inside her might be lost to fans, much less how Wicked, one of the most sadistic and amoral members of the Ostinato Musicians had a Heel–Face Turn. All that is a case of All There in the Manual and only known to anyone who's read the novel Caligula EPISODE: Marie Mizuguchi ~Kanojo no mita Sekai~ which, unfortunately for fans of the series in the west, has not been localized.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: The distinct lack of social skills and narrow fields of expertise have caused fans to think that both Bluffman and Regret are somewhere on the Autism spectrum. The fact that Regret thinks that she inherited her traits from her father only strengthens this belief.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: The female protagonist is paired with many characters, though her most popular choices are Gin and Kobato. Likewise, with her male counterpart, he's shipped with Marie, Kiriko and Gin.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Extracurricular Affair questline is all part of Megumi Arata's plan to get into a romantic relationship with her teacher, and the end of the quest takes a humorous turn when Megumi's friend, who previously accused Takihara of sexually harassing her at Megumi's behest and retracted her claim when the plan reached fruition, decides to get payback against Megumi by stealing Takihara away from her. Sounds pretty hilarious, right? Not so much if you dive into Takihara's profile. He entered Redo because the last time he got into a relationship with a student it cost him his job. Small wonder he's so distressed by the whole ordeal.
  • Ho Yay: Since Gin is treated as the protagonist's closest friend regardless of gender, many fans tend to think of them this way. It doesn't help that, in his Character Episode, Gin is noted for having incredible synergy with them and one of the first choices for the protagonist is dating him, again, regardless of gender.
  • It Was His Sled: By now, the reveal of Marie Amabuki being an amnesiac Wicked is well-known to fans.
  • Low-Tier Letdown: Trying to use Ryuto in Extreme difficulty, where death is one or two hits away, really emphasizes how poorly he's designed for it. When you get him, most enemies are liable to ignore his Provoke buff, his purely Evasion-based tanking is almost useless due to the Accuracy/Evasion penalties of the difficulty, and even in higher levels with more skills, several members are either more effective at doing his job or much more flexible than him.
  • Magnificent Bitch:
    • Megumi Arata from the "Extracurricular Affair" questline. The accusation of sexual harassment that Jou Kurokawa's been trying to deal with for the majority of the quest? It's all part of her plan to hook up with him.
    • Kudan is responsible for propaganda, helping bolster Regret's fame across Redo. She's also one hell of a strategist, orchestrating a series of events that would lead to Regret all but proclaimed to be Redo's goddess by revealing the Go-Home Club to the general public, releasing an edited video of Kotaro attempting to kill #QP to label them public enemy number one and then broadcast her own battle with them in the hopes of raising Regret to even further heights. While the Go-Home Club has had plenty of close calls, Kudan is one of the few Obbligato Musicians to push them to the absolute limit and still manage to score a victory over them.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Bluffman certainly crossed it when he had Kudan enact a series of propaganda broadcasts to boost the citizens of Redo's affection for Regret while labeling the Go-Home Club public enemy number one. This isn't what makes him cross the line, though. Because the citizens of Redo's love for Regret has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels, it causes the Metaverse-Es to swallow Redo, potentially killing everyone in the virtual world save for the Go-Home Club who managed to escape at the last second and the Obbligato Musicians themselves.
    • In-Universe, the Go-Home Club considers Kudan's deactivation of Machina, who is actually a kid in real life, to be one, especially since Kudan herself states deactivating him is the same as killing him.
  • That One Boss: Kranke's wheelchair. You'd think the owner would be more dangerous, but like Kobato, Kranke's weapon suffers from both long wind-up and cooldown times and terrible accuracy. In contrast, her wheelchair moves quickly, has several multi-hit charges in a row, and can send unprepared Go-Home Club members flying, severely damaging them and leaving them easy prey for Kranke. And in the second encounter it is able to follow-up one one of its attacks up to three times, juggling its helpless victim endlessly. Not even someone as tanky as Sasara can withstand this assault. Worse still, these attacks count as piercing moves meaning that you can't defend against it other than trying to dash out of the way. And with how fast these attacks come out, that is easier said than done. The one saving grace during the fight is that the wheelchair has far less HP than Kranke herself and will not respawn once defeated.
  • Shocking Moments: Assuming you didn't already figure it out with the gigantic hints spread throughout, Marie turning out to be none other than former Ostinato Musician and Mad Bomber Wicked may come as a huge shock.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The original game was a decent game that was held back by several design issues and problematic handling of subject matter, along with being childish/edgy at times. While this game shares some of the first games low budget issues, it has been seen as a massive improvement over the original almost across the board. People are only really split on which story they think is better and the casting.
