The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975)
- Adaptation Displacement: The movie was based on a 1971 book by Jack Bickham. Though the basic plot of a bachelor in the Wild West being forced to care for a gaggle of children remains, most of the characters and subplots were either heavily altered or Adapted Out completely.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: The adult leads are named Dusty and Donovan. Several years after the film was made, on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, one of the teen characters (played by Brian Bloom) would be named Dusty Donovan.
- Ho Yay: Theodore and Amos of the Hash Knife Outfit have been compared to a bickering old married couple by some fans.
- There's one point in the film where Amos lights a cigarette on Theodore's rear end. ...In the words of another Comedy Western, "Kinky".
- Retroactive Recognition: Right after this film, Harry Morgan took up his most famous role as Colonel Sherman T. Potter.
- Special Effects Failure: The scene with the runaway minecart is a particularly noticeable example of Driving a Desk.
- Values Dissonance: A child with a bladder problem would never be played for laughs nowadays. (Probably not an adult either, but especially not a child.)
The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again (1979)
- Sequelitis: Many agree that the sequel The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, while not necessarily terrible, is not as good as the first film.
