YMMV / The African Queen

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Unsurprisingly the film is far better known than the original novel.
  • Award Snub: It received four Academy Award nominations and Humphrey Bogart won for Best Actor, but it wasn't nominated for Best Picture.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Charlie and Rose succeed in bombing the German ship and escape execution, swimming happily to shore while singing. But they're now stranded in Africa with nothing but the rags on their backs, in German-occupied territory inhabited by a crew of German sailors who want to execute them. They're in for rough times ahead at best.
  • Hollywood Homely: Before dying, Rose's brother says that she is not beautiful, so she can be a good servant of God. Rose is played by Katharine Hepburn.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • One of the German gunboat's officers was played by Walter Gotell, 12 years before the first of what became a long association with a long-running film franchise.
    • An Officer of Shona is played by Richard Marner, who would later be best known for playing Colonel von Strohm in 'Allo 'Allo!.
  • Values Dissonance: The opening scene of the African tribesmen making random noises while staring blankly at the missionaries trying to lead them in a hymn would not go over very well in modern times. Nor would the scene right afterward where a bunch of men squabble like children over Charlie's discarded cigar.
