YMMV / Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage

Go To

  • Anticlimax Boss: Being a Stationary Boss with weak and predictable attacks and a relatively low pool of health, the Final Boss is one of the easiest fights, especially in comparison to Zodd, the whole last act of the game, and even Mandragora Balzac.
  • Breather Level: The Mandragoran village, simply because there's no walls for your sword to hit.
  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: The gameplay might be dated, but the story is still very enjoyable, particularly since it was written by Miura himself.
  • Narm: Balzac's name is pronounced very similarly to a particular word, making a lot of drama surrounding the character hysterical.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: While some aspects are considered to have not aged well, the game is generally seen as a solid action game with an ambitious story written by Kentaro Miura himself, with the main criticism being that it's very short.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Oh, take your pick...the sword bouncing off the walls is the most commonly cited, but then there's the Save-Game Limits, the fact that Guts always puts up his sword after cutscenes, the fact that the graphics are so damn dark, not being able to access the options during gameplay...
  • That One Boss: The fight with Zodd. His attacks are really fast and hard to see coming, unblockable and do large amounts of damage and he can soak up a huge amount of attacks himself. Appropriate really, since he's easily the most powerful enemy to actually appear in the game, even if it is only as a cameo half-way through the game rather than the end boss.
  • That One Level: The sequence where you have to run down a corridor ahead of the mandragora tentacles smashing through it behind you. Depending on the difficulty level you're allowed either at most 3, 1, or NO slip-ups before being instantly killed and the part where you have to run TOWARDS the camera is particularly annoying. It's quite plausible to beat the preceding boss without losing a single life, only to lose ALL your lives at once on this one sequence.
