YMMV / Reign Over Me

  • Broken Base: Adam Sandler's performance. It's generally agreed to be a step up from his usual acting, but whether it's good on its own or simply more respectable than his lowbrow comedies is up for debate.
  • Critical Dissonance: As with his other serious film around that time, Punch-Drunk Love, this was more acclaimed by critics than Adam Sandler's other films but it barely made even with its budget. And while the few audiences that saw it loved it, critics thought it was merely okay.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Charlie, for the most part, appears to have high-functioning autism due to childlike behavior, stimming by listening to music, social awkwardness, and preference for solitude. However, his behavior is actually a result of untreated PTSD/Depression and prolonged grief-induced isolation as he used to be more social. While it isn't confirmed or acknowledged, Charlie appears to have autistic coding to his character.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Adam Sandler's character spends a lot of his free time playing Shadow of the Colossus, a game where the central plot revolves around bringing a loved one back from the dead. It also involves giants as big as buildings being knocked over.
  • Narm: Some of Charlie's more intense scenes where he devolves into aimless screaming. It's obvious that Adam Sandler is trying really hard to be sincere, but it comes off sounding more like the goofy Manchild noises he makes in Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore.
  • Tear Jerker: Charlie tearfully telling Johnson about his family.
