- Acclaimed Flop: One of the few Adam Sandler movies to actually get positive reviews, but didn't break even domestically.

- Creator Killer: This movie's financial failure convinced Sandler to shut down the barely-new drama division of his company, Madison 23 (although it got credit for Funny People), while producer Jack Binder didn't work another film for 5 years.
- Playing Against Type: Sandler's films are usually Denser and Wackier, but this film he was in was a drama, which started (and ended) his new company.
- Real Song Theme Tune: The film is named after the song "Love Reign O'Er Me" by The Who, one of the songs Charlie listens to shut out the world. A cover by Pearl Jam plays over the credits.
- Swan Song: This was Melinda Dillon's final film appearance before her subsequent retirememt from acting the same year of its release and later death in early 2023.
