• Hilarious in Hindsight: The Acrocanthosaurus being killed by the Kronosaurus, a large marine reptile. What movie out there had a giant theropod killed by an even larger marine predator?
• Magnificent Bastard: The young Utahraptor, "Raptor Red", is a skilled hunter and killer, opening by bringing down a much larger dinosaur with her mate who is tragically killed in the process. After wandering and meeting her sister and nieces, Red shows herself repeatedly as unusually intelligent even for a Utahraptor with numerous successful kills and ploys. Upon being attacked by enormous predators, Red lures one into the ocean to be seized by a Kronosaurus, later taking a new male as a mate and growing her pack to live free and peacefully.
• Narm:
  • The constant usage of Written Sound Effect and Hulk Speak translation of the dinosaur's thoughts, the latter sometimes going into Suddenly Shouting.
  • Bakker constantly comparing attributes of animals to human things, or just using informal language like "bug-boppers", may have been to make the paleontology easier for the average reader to understand, but gets old quickly. His nonfiction work The Dinosaur Heresies, despite its critical role in the Dinosaur Renaissance, also has this problem.
• "Stop Having Fun" Guys - It's easy to see this attitude in the criticisms of the book by other paleontologists, who were mostly of the opinion that there should be no speculation and no tolerance for any sort of inaccuracy even if it were so small as to be cosmetic. Try on this actual quote from paleontologist David Norman.
  "The merging of science and fantasy is at its worst in books like Raptor Red because none but the experts can disentangle fact from fiction; this type of nonsense turns an uninformed reader into a misinformed one."
