- Badass Decay: Dudley Smith is far from the unflappable, Crazy-Prepared Magnificent Bastard he was in the first L. A. Quartet; granted, these books are set much earlier so he might grow into it yet.
- Evil Is Sexy: Dudley is so compelling that he ends up having a torrid affair with (the actual, factual) Bette Davis. The closeted Hideo is also intensely attracted to Smith, a fact that Dudley is well aware of and more than willing to exploit.
