YMMV / Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: A remake of the raunchy, politically incorrect comedy Blazing Saddles intended for a family-oriented audience, primarily children, didn't entirely sit well with a lot of people. Its Troubled Production and seeming similarities to Kung Fu Panda didn't help matters.
  • Cliché Storm: If you've seen any CGI animated film about an underdog protagonist who eventually gains the respect of their peers, then you've seen this movie.
  • Dancing Bear: The fact that the film is even coming out after getting hit with a major case of Troubled Production and languishing in Development Hell for 7 years was enough to get some people curious about it.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Kakamucho is obviously based on ancient Japan, and in the movie that land had a rule that dogs were not allowed in the country, which was populated by cats. In real life, during the Edo period, Japan was a closed country, no one was allowed to leave, and foreigners weren't allowed to visit.
  • Popular with Furries: The film's cast is comprised of anthropomorphic animals, so it was more or less a shoe-in to get some attention from furries. Sumo in particular has gotten attention among furry Bara fans who appreciate his friendly personality and the amount of attention given to his big fat butt — it doesn't hurt that for years, one of the only pieces of public promotional material for the film was a render of Sumo's butt.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Quite a number of people find the film's new name to be too generic sounding, preferring the original title (Blazing Samurai) as more unique and befitting a film intended to be a homage to Blazing Saddles.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Some think the movie’s premise is too similar to Kung Fu Panda, since both are about a plucky underdog protagonist learning martial arts in a world of anthropomorphic Funny Animals.
  • Uncertain Audience: It's a pseudo-remake of Blazing Saddles as an animated children's movie. Fans of the original movie were put off by the concept alone (not helped by the fact that it's considered a Tough Act to Follow), parents were unlikely to take their children to a film based off of a politically incorrect adult comedy, and any chances that it would stand up on its own merits were dashed once it became evident it would be a Cliché Storm, leaving a movie that struggled to appeal to anyone.
  • The Woobie: Hank is a genuinely nice and timid dog who pretty much serves as a punching bag for the first half of the movie. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, it's hard not to feel bad for the poor guy.
