Neoquest I provides examples of the following (subjective) tropes:

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Faleinn is normally fairly difficult, except if you bring along the Keladrian Medallion.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: Almost everyone uses Shock as their primary element, with other points invested in some combination of Spectral and Life. It doesn't help that magic resistance is only available through Shock.
  • That One Boss: The Archmagus of Roo can combine ice and fire blasts with a three-round stun, heal himself and drain your health. Even if you can get hits in between his attacks, it's hard to make the damage stick.


Neoquest II provides examples of the following (subjective) tropes:

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The act bosses of Chapters 2, 3, and 4. The mobs leading up to Scuzzy and Anubits are harder than the bosses themselves. The Esophagor can hit hard, but compared to the bosses that came before him, he's pretty simple and straightforward.
  • Breather Boss: Several. The most notable of these are probably the Sand Grundo and the Revenant, mostly because you have new characters (Mipsy and Velm, respectively) to help you out.
  • Difficulty Spike: After you beat the Spider Grundo, your next destination is Balthazar's Grove which holds your next rest point, situated right next to the Four Faeries. Afterwards, you have a long trek through Nox Mountain Range and the Esophagor's Swamp with no new rest points in between, and if you do try and tackle Nox himself on the way, your supplies can easily wear out.
  • Goddamned Bats: Any enemy that can use Combat Focus turns into a Stone Wall, taking and dealing very little physical damage and essentially drawing out the length of a random encounter.
  • Goddamned Boss: Hubrid Nox. First you have to climb his tower which is 9 floors high. That's a pain, and then when you get to him, you find that his strategy is all about self-haste, slowing you, and healing himself a lot. Unless you run out of slowing potions, it's very unlikely that he'll actually be able to kill you, however, he is resistant to magic and slowing potions, and using all your potions is a real possibility. If you have to flee, it's a long way back to Auger Faunt to buy new potions. Thankfully, Nox is optional.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Instead of simply playing as one character, in Neoquest II you get to play as four. There are also more boss battles as well as many more non-player characters to talk to. It also has a major plot twist.
  • That One Boss:
    • Zombom introduces a bunch of new skills and abilities that you've never seen before (hasting, healing, and magic attacks). Most of these can't be countered reliably, if at all, and what's even more frustrating is that potions that would've reduced the difficulty of the fight and a new party member that could have done the same only become available after you defeat him.
    • To some players, the Leximp can be somewhat challenging. He is notable for his speed and can hit for a decent amount of damage. His placement as the first boss in the second act and before any major city opens up (in fact, you have to defeat him to access a city) means your resources may be exhausted even before you face him. At this point in the game, potions are important, and if you don't have enough or are underleveled, he could catch you by surprise with how fast and unpredictable he is. Thankfully, like Nox, he is not required to complete the game.
    • The Four Faeries is a major stumbling block for players, mainly because this one fight is a 4-on-4 unlike most other boss fights. They can do nearly everything your party can with a fair bit more HP than you can ever hope to attain, and the increased number of turns they gain can lay waste to the party if the A.I. Roulette rolls its choices against your favour.
    • Even for a final boss, Terask II is very difficult to beat. As if Terask I wasn't challenging enough, his second form can do everything Terask I could but even better. Not only does he resist the damage you deal to him, he has access to all the abilities in the game including healing himself, and unlike the other bosses, you can't even flee from him if you walk in unprepared, giving the player only one chance to beat him on InSaNe difficulty.
