YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S7 E12 "Discordant Harmony"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: "Doin' anything for ya?"
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Was Discord vanishing because he started behaving against his chaotic self, because he made his home too normal, or was it all a trick to get Fluttershy to act like him and live in his dimension?
    • Some have pointed out the fridge logic in Discord going shopping for tea party supplies when he can conjure anything from nothing. However, since this was all started by him noticing how much effort Fluttershy put into her tea parties, he could have simply wanted to put in as much effort as she did. Alternatively, since he's never hosted a tea party before, he might not know what all would be good for one beyond the obvious teapot and tea(which he still goes shopping for because he has to ask what Fluttershy would prefer), so he has to browse for ideas; especially since, at least at the beginning, he's trying to make his more abnormal than Fluttershy's—why else would he buy a piñata and a lava lamp when Fluttershy's never used them at her tea parties?
  • Broken Base:
    • How much people liked this episode is largely dependent on how much they're amused by Discord's harmless antics. For those unamused, it's an episode about a fairly boring man getting ready for a tea party.
    • Discord's "normal" outfit being that of Fred Rogers has been controversial, with some seeing it as the fun Shout-Out it was intended as, and others complaining that it implies Mr. Rogers was boring.
  • I Knew It!: A lot of fan art and fanfics have depicted Fluttershy as some kind of Nightmare Fetishist. With her disappointment in Discord's attempts to make his home completely normal, this is confirmed, at least in terms of their Odd Friendship.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • One of the tunes sung by the ginseng tea bags sounds similar to "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" from Pinocchio.
    • The music that plays as Discord’s "team" enters sounds extremely similar to the the theme to Pinky and the Brain.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: While the episode had a "Be Yourself" Aesop, it fails to talk about how Discord has already changed himself by reforming. There is a notable difference between Villain Discord and Reformed Discord, and him voicing concern about going back to his old ways would have been an interesting way to go.
  • The Woobie: Discord. Not only is he more anxiety-ridden than we've ever seen him, but he nearly gets erased via accidentally self-inflicted Kryptonite Factor. Helped by the fact this is arguably the first time Discord has fully well-intentioned motivations throughout the story and isn't being (much of) an antagonist or Jerkass.
