YMMV / Matt Riddle

Go To

  • Adorkable: His WWE main roster persona has evolved into this, and not just because of the scooter he rides everywhere.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: An incident on a 2021 episode of RAW involved Riddle seemingly forgetting his lines during a skit with Asuka. It's often assumed to be a botch, but some suspect that Riddle was scripted to say something racist, and he refused to follow through with it when the moment came. His line as he rides off on his scooter can support either version of events.
    "That's not right."
  • Broken Base: While fans and pundits are unanimous Riddle turned out a beast of a pro wrestler in his transition from MMA, his character and booking are much more divisive. Some like him for being a funny stoner fratboy, while others find him an unpleasant jerk with an attitude problem, and a third camp doesn't find anything wrong with him but believe he should be booked as a heel as soon as possible. Entering the field of Riddle as a real life worker is an even worse topic.
  • Designated Hero: Both among fans and detractors, there's the perception that Riddle acts too much as a heel in social media despite being booked as a babyface, which isn't helped by reports (rather confirmed by his own tweets, to rub salt into the wound) that he's difficult to work with in real life despite being very popular with fans. His own personal life and story with Candy Cartwright (as well as his own wife Lisa's body-shaming story with Becky Lynch) only made it even more controversial to fully side with him even as a wrestler.
  • Never Live It Down: His line in a 2013 interview that only weed keeps him from beating up his children. Joke or not, it is brought up often by dissers for how distasteful it was.
    • During his legal dispute in 2020, he posted a statement from his lawyer that was inexplicably printed on a roll of stickers.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: His beef with Goldberg saw Riddle claiming go on a rant about beating the older wrestler with a single kick. Regardless of whether the affair was a work or shoot, and despite Goldberg being far from a wholly liked figure himself, the fact that a former UFC fighter went bragging about the idea of attacking a 50-year-old man who's never been a professional fighter ended up turning a lot of people against Riddle, who was supposedly a babyface wrestler at the time.
