- Cult Classic: Perhaps one of the least recognized Spin-Offs in Nintendo's biggest franchise. In fact, it's even overshadowed by fellow Cult Classic Mario Strikers, however there are those who played it that say it is a solid title worth checking out. It helps that it is the only Mario sports entry released on the Nintendo DS in contrast to later Handheld entries released on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch which mostly proved to be rather divisive.
- Difficulty Spike: The game really picks up during the Flower Tourney, peaking at the Rainbow Tourney. Hard mode cups are Hard.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Of the Final Fantasy characters that were converted to the aesthetics of Mario, White Mage is quite popular, being designed similarly to Princess Peach and Daisy, complimented by her Holy abilities and cheerful personality. She'd debut a full year before Super Mario Galaxy introduced another official princess character, Rosalina.
- Retroactive Recognition: If you're wondering who made the game's great music, fans of Final Fantasy XIV and avid followers of Final Fantasy XVI's development may recognize the name Masayoshi Soken in the credits roll. As a tidbit, this is similar to how Yoko Shimomura first composed Super Mario RPG and the Mario & Luigi series before going on to compose Final Fantasy XV.
