YMMV / Katie and Orbie

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: An episode from the first season deals with Katie, Orbie, and their mother going to see a play and meeting its costumed lead character, named ''Deadly Dick the Dreadful Dragon".
  • Adaptation Displacement: The series itself is not exactly very well-known, but the original books are so obscure that for a long time not even a single image of them could be found online. According to creator Ben Wicks, a large part of the books' print run had to be bought back from the publisher due to their low sales.
  • Inferred Holocaust: What apparently happened to Orbie's planet and presumably his entire species.
  • Older Than They Think: Yes, Lilo & Stitch was not the first animated work to feature a girl befriending an alien (although obviously, Orbie's backstory differs greatly from Stitch's, and other than that, the two works have nothing in common). Incidentally, the series aired on Disney Channel in the US.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: A cute, innocent and colorful series about a little girl and her alien friend, narrated by the sweet voice of an actor best known for comedic roles.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Anytime the usually cheerful Katie becomes sad and cries, but especially two episodes: Am I Invisible? (where she thinks her family doesn't love her anymore as they are busy with other things) and Everybody Gets the Blues (where she has a sad and grumpy day and thinks she'll never be happy again, and in which she outright bursts into despair tears). Thankfully, both episodes have heartwarming endings (in the first one, Orbie and her parents give her a surprise, and in the latter, neighbor Mrs. Parette cheers her up by making her remember 10 things that make her feel happy).
    • Great Uncle David is also a bit of a tear jerker from an adult perspective, if not a kid's, as the elderly title character is shown feeling sad at not being able to live independently anymore, having to leave his house and garden behind to move into a retirement home, and still mourning his wife's death (the only time in the whole series that death is mentioned); it ends on a happy note, though, with Katie and Orbie helping him make friends and find happiness in his new home.
    • Seeing Orbie outright furious after Katie accidentally breaks his toy plane in Orbie the Grouch, and him yelling and chasing after her in an out-of-character manner.
