YMMV / Kabouter Plop

Go To

  • Awesome Music: All of the songs, especially Lalala, Wat een Feest, and Hopsa. And let's not get started on De Kabouterdans and Er Zit Een Gat In Mijn Dak.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Lui is constantly tired and always finds ways to go to sleep. It's theorized that Lui has Narcolepsy from some Belgian fans of the series.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The song "Daar Zijn Vrienden Voor" is about friendship and caring for others. Especially when it's performed live when one of the characters invite the audience to sing along with them.
    • The entire song Snuffeltje where Smal is explaining to Plop and later the other gnomes about how much she loves and care about her bunny doll. Especially when the entire main cast later joins in and sings along with her.
    • The song Biebabeloeba Baby focuses on Lui taking care of a lost gnome baby. Mainly since Lui actually tries to not sleep very often or his laziness get the best of him. Said baby belongs to a family of circus and clowns gnomes.
    • The way the cast are interacting with all the kids after (or rather, during the last part of) a live show. They dance with them, smile at them, give hugs and receive drawings and artwork.
    • Near the end of the episode Het beeldhouwwerk, Lui is crying after Klus and Kwebbel make fun of his small statue. Smal actually loves the gift he made for her and gives him a kiss to cheer him up.
    • The way Anna's father looks at her near the end of the movie "Plop en het Vioolavontuur". The violin is fixed and she's playing on stage beautifully with the gnomes and her father watching, him close to tears and being just as proud as a father possibly can be.
  • Memetic Mutation: The series is a very popular target in the Flemish/Belgian Youtube Poop community.
    • Also very famous in the Animutation community worldwide due to Andrew Kepple's Plan Nine from Underpants (which uses the song De Kabouterdans) and Darkhampster's Lalala (which uses the same song).
    • This continued into the Buffalax/Misheard Lyrics community even after the animutations craze died with the equally catchy Fart in the Duck (Er Zit Een Gat In Mijn Dak proper).
    • Lui's catchphrase "Ik Word Daar Zoe Moe Van" has become very memetic in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Flanders region of Belgium, it isn't hard to hear "X!? Ik Word Daar Zoe Moe Van Y." for daily conversations or jokes by children and some adult viewers. The same thing applies to Kwebbel's catchphrase "Oops! Ik praat veel te veel" and "Ik zal nog eens iets zeggen he!" for people who are prone to talking too much.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The sound of the characters hats raising up and the bells ringing on there hats when ever they get surprised, excited or shocked.
    • Also the whistle like sound heard in various songs by the show such as the song Hopsa
    • Speaking of music, it's also very fun and relaxing to hear the singing voice of Plop, Kwebbel, Klus and Smal.
  • Periphery Demographic:
    • The show has as somewhat of a following among young adults in the English-speaking world due to its catchy songs and the bizarre Mondegreens that exist for said songs.
    • The series itself is popular with grown ups in Belgium and the Netherlands. Plop, Klus, Kwebbel, and Lui actually made a live appearance at a concert in 2010 where most of the audience members are adults.
    • In recent years, the franchise has gained a larger following with stoners in Belgium and The Netherlands. Plop actually appeared at "Kamping Kitsch Club" note  to perform the show's songs to adult audiences on August 21, 2022.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • "Het Konijn Van Lui" where Lui starts to cry over his broken bunny doll and later in the episode when he thinks he lost it.
    • Also in the episode/song "Joepiejee" in which he just starts crying and doesn't even know why. Thankfully, Lui's friends manage to cheer him up and is later seen joining the others.
    • Seeing Plop crying in the episode "Plops Verjaardagstraat" when he believes his friends forgotten his birthday even though a giant cake was inside his house. Mainly since Plop is rarely seen crying except this episode.
    • In the end of the music video for Jij Praat Teveel, after the gnomes kick her out of Plop's Milk Bar. Kwebbel responds by saying "Kwebbel De Kwebbel" in a sad and ashamed tone and walks away after the gnomes get tired of her being a blabbermouth.
    • Many times in the movie "Plop in de Wolken", in which the gang is trying to save Plop's dying grandfather. There is a LOT of crying and comforting, from all the characters (especially Plop).
    • The song "Ik ben zo ziek" is about Plop catching the Kabouter Flu (Gnome Flu). Plop sings about his stomach hurting occasionally, doesn't feel like baking cakes and plop milk, and being sick for days. He mentions that Kwebbel takes special care of him. Throughout the song, Plop is heard coughing and sneezing and sounding depressed.
  • The Woobie: Lui can at times be interpreted as one, seeing as he's written as the most innocent of all the gnomes, often falling in love and is heavily crying in no less than four episodes (and two movies), especially in "Het Konijn Van Lui" in which he cries over a stuffed animal.
    • In the movie "Plop in de Wolken" he also has a moment in which he's being held captive by a couple of other gnomes. He lays on the ground crying out "I want my friends!" a good couple of times, constantly being told that they're never coming back by the other gnomes.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • The characters are seen in Black Face in the music video for "Wij Dansen" while mimicking an African tribe. The music video eventually got removed from the show's official Youtube channel at an unknown time.
    • One episode from the show called "Kabouter Klusoemba" features Klus in black make up. That episode was also removed from the show's official Youtube channel.
    • There's a song called "Een Kabouterindiaantje", which translates to "A Gnome Indian", which may sound racist to Native Americans today.
  • Ship Tease: In the Walloon version, Klus and Kwebbel do have a lot of moments like this. Especially in one show starring the duo in Walloan area in Belgium.
    • There's something beautiful about Klus and Lui taking care of a baby together in "Plop en de kabouterbaby",
