YMMV / Gnosia

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Default night visit lines are tied to trust and love/amicability, whereas visited rooms are randomly generated. One of Raqio's lines involves them asking the player to help them with their research. While this doesn't seem off in the vast majority of the locations they visit (which include their own room, the laboratory, sickbay, and the synthesis plant) or might be a bit out of place in some, it definitely raises some eyebrows if they ask you for help in the shower.
  • Angst? What Angst?: The event where Setsu gets into a fight with, and kills, Sha-Ming when neither of them are Gnosia is treated with at most mild shock from the player character and no reaction from everyone else — everyone carries on as if somebody wasn't Killed Offscreen in a way completely unrelated to the threat at hand.
  • Awesome Art: The character artwork and the outfits are gorgeous.
  • Bizarro Episode: One event-based loop is completely insane compared to the rest. After Comet was put into cold sleep, her slime escapes and goes crazy, killing most of the crew. The protagonist has to team up with Gnosia Sha-Ming and be put into cold sleep together by Stella to escape, only to be woken up by Jonas. It turns out that Jonas was responsible for the incident by opening up Comet's medical pod, and that he managed to kill the slime by turning the ship into a sauna. Sha-Ming, as Gnosia, demands to know why Jonas took Comet out of cold sleep, but Jonas refuses to answer and keeps changing the subject. Sha-Ming is so disappointed by this series of events that he demands to be put into cold sleep and never woken up again.
Sha-Ming: "DAMMIT! What the hell is going on here?! Everything is screwed! That's it! The end! I'm goin' to sleep! I'm goin' to cold sleep, so don't wake me up!"
    • If you set up a scenario in which you play a role such as the Doctor or Engineer, let someone else reveal themselves to be your role, confirm them to be human, then do something with your role that proves it impossible for that character to be telling the truth, then one of the next mornings will result in characters babbling nonsense and multiple Raqios copying onto the scene before the game informs you of the incident and forces the loop to end.
    • If both Shigemichi and Jonas claim to be the Engineer, the former may propose for the two of them to decide who is the true one via a gaming session. The latter will agree, but Setsu will force them to postpone the match until after the debate. Provided neither of them is sent into cold sleep, the player will find them battling in the Rec Room, with Remnan providing commentary and Stella talking about Jonas' video game addiction. After the match is done, the winner will gleefully announce that they won because they're Gnosia. Everyone goes silent in shock at the revelation... and the winner is immediately sent into cold sleep.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Despite the fanbase lacking a prominent shipping movement, especially in the West, Gina/SQ is noticeably popular. Remnan/Raqio is also pretty widely shipped, especially in Japan.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The game has a sizeable Korean fanbase, complete with having the only unofficial translation patch in the language, as well as being relatively popular with Poles.
  • Love to Hate: Raqio is often rude and biting, but they’ve got a good side.
  • Memetic Badass: Yuriko quickly became this due to her powerful stats, skills, and take-no-prisoners style of argumentation. For example: she's the first character to demonstrate the "Retaliate" skill: a powerful counterattack against direct accusations which severely damages your reputation with every other character in the room. It's not impossible to get the better of her, but if she targets you when you're a Gnosia, or you try to fridge her before the evidence against her is overwhelming, you're probably going to spend a lot of time eating shit.
  • Memetic Loser: Sha-Ming, no doubt. His cowardice and Casanova Wannabe behavior - which he can take to extremes such as defending a female crew member even if she's a Definite Enemy - have turned him into something of a laughingstock within the community.
  • Memetic Mutation: Bread surgery.Explanation
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • A few contenders. Even some of the nicer characters can be pushed to shocking acts if so provoked.
    • SQ helping a Gnosia PC murder the entire crew so that the two of you can elope is probably the biggest one.
    • Asshole Victim is in place, but Stella-as-LeVi freezing Jonas to death because he brushed off her death in a flippant way is rather terrifying.
    • In one event based loop where both Kukrushka and Remnan are Guard Duty together, the former will propose putting everybody into cold sleep except for the two of them to stop the Gnosia threat immediately without anyone dying. The game then cuts to Remnan waking you up and telling you that Kukrushka ejected everyone else into outer space. They then enter the room and you get a shot of their "Uh-Oh" Eyes before the game fades to red and the loop ends there.
Win/Loss message: Kukrushka has... destroyed everything.
    • Manan was already a pretty horrible person, considering she (and her husband) enslaved Remnan, treated him like a pet and placed a collar on his neck that wouldn’t allow him to even move without permission, but she definitely crossed a line when she raped him and afterwards taunted him with the possibility that she conceived SQ with him, triggering a breakdown.
  • That One Level: One event you must do at some point to advance the plot has Yuriko (a Gnosia) challenge you and Setsu to get her put in cold sleep, while both you and Setsu must remain alive. However, not only is Yuriko already infamously difficult as an opponent, the real challenge is that Setsu will immediately accuse her in discussions, to which Yuriko will simply use Retaliate and get Setsu voted for instead. As it's entirely possible to get this event early in the game, it's easy to fail it right off the bat, and many players have to attempt it multiple times before coming up with a strategy or developing the stats to simply brute force it.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Raqio's arrogance and caustic personality certainly wins them no fans on board the ship, but their Awesome Ego and interesting character design has made them quite popular with players.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Setsu is nonbinary, but since it almost never comes up outside of their character profile many players assumed that they were female based on their long hair. The English localization later patched in a line where Setsu tells off Sha-Ming for referring to them with feminine terms when they are actually nonbinary.
  • The Woobie: Remnan is a timid young man who acts kind despite clearly dealing with trauma from having been enslaved by a sadistic rapist who will try to take control of him again if the player doesn't stop it, regardless of the form she's currently in. Even besides that, he can't seem to catch a break - at one point, the player is forced to abandon him while he's being dissolved alive by parasitic slime mold. It's hard not to feel bad for the guy.
