• Broken Base: Vern and Johnny being shot to death by Stewie. At the time, they had acquired a significant hatedom for being annoying and having a bland routine. The creators of the show met those fans by killing them both off in this episode (although they have sporadically made cameos as ghosts since). Fans who defend their style of comedy say their murders came across as mean-spirited and that there were other options for retiring them and their acts in case they got too tiresome.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Marilyn Manson encouraging Chris to be a responsible citizen ends up being more uncomfortable when Manson himself would be accused of sexual misconduct and abuse by Evan Rachel Wood and several other women fifteen years later.
• Unintentional Period Piece: Brian and Stewie attempt to get kicked out of the military by pretending to be gay. "Don't Ask Don't Tell", the law that required the military to discharge openly gay servicemembers, was repealed in December 2010, and the military's ban on gay soldiers was officially scrapped a few months later in 2011.
