YMMV / Drillbit Taylor

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Drillbit giving Filkins a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown is nothing short of satisfaction.
    • Drillbit attacking Don while retrieving Wade's stolen property also qualifies.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: The main villains in the story are Filkins and Ronnie, two Barbaric Bullies who terrorize Wade, Ryan, and Emmitt daily, to the point where hire Drillbit Taylor as their bodyguard. And yet, they are impossible to hate due to their hilarious moments. Wade's Jerkass stepbrothers and stepfather also give him heart-to-heart talks. Meanwhile, Don and his gang of hobos serve as a bad influence on Drillbit, leading to his friendship with the main trio breaking apart. Don is arrested after a fight with Drillbit, although the others never face punishment.
  • Love to Hate: Both Filkins and Ronnie are Barbaric Bullies who are nonetheless very enjoyable thanks to being Laughably Evil.
  • Moral Event Horizon: While Filkins manages to hover over the line, he finally crossed it when he tried to murder Ryan, Wade and Emmit with a samurai sword.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Filkins is full of these moments, such as:
      • Attempting to run down Wade, Ryan and Emmit in his car after they attempt to report him, laughing hysterically at one point while doing so.
      • "Now I have to make it my mission to destroy you punks!"
      • The fact that Filkins cut off a kid's arm with a samurai sword. If attempting to run down Wade, Ryan and Emmit with his car wasn't an indication of how dangerous Filkins is, this information definitely is.
      • Hugging Wade's mother and looking menacingly at Wade while the theme from Cape Fear is heard.
      • Him throwing his samurai sword through the air at Wade, Ryan and Emmit at the end of the fight.
    • The old man whose garage Wade, Ryan and Emmit try to escape from Filkins and Ronnie in, who threatens to get his shotgun if they don't get out in three seconds. It even scares Filkins and Ronnie away.
  • Signature Scene: The above-mentioned scene where Filkins tries to run down Wade, Ryan, and Emmit with his car is generally considered the most memorable part of the film.
  • Squick: When Drillbit is first disguising himself as a teacher and removes his socks, you can hear them crunch as he removes them, and they're so dirty, they stand up by themselves.
  • The Woobie:
    • Wade. It seems everyone except Ryan, Emmit, Brooke, his mother, and maybe Drillbit are out to get him, including his Jerkass stepdad and stepbrothers, and that's before we get to Filkins and Ronnie and then Drillbit's friends robbing his house. He even mentions to Drillbit that before he showed up, Wade felt like his life was going to be hell forever. Hammered home with this line when about to ask Brooke out: "My life sucks so bad that even if she says no, I won't exactly have far to fall."
    • Ryan and Emmit as well, though Ryan is a little more of a Jerkass Woobie because of him essentially being a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Doesn't make you feel any less sorry for him and Emmit when they're targeted by Filkins and Ronnie just as much as Wade is, because they're nearly always targeted together.
