YMMV / Doctor Who S31 E7 "Amy's Choice"

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Many fans thought that The Reveal that both versions of "reality" are illusions created by the Dream Lord was far too predictable. Too many aspects of the "Upper Leadworth" dream fall under Like You Would Really Do It, which in turn ironically means that the TARDIS dream can't be real either because that would be too obvious a conclusion to draw. (It also doesn't help that the "cold star" is a massive example of Artistic License – Physics even by the show's usual standards, which the characters themselves consistently lampshade).
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the "Upper Leadworth" dream, Rory is hit by the Eknodines' green mist. He ends up disintegrating into dust in front of Amy, saying some final parting words. 8 years later, Avengers: Infinity War has Amy's actor, Karen Gillan, witness a begging Peter Parker turn into dust in front of his mentor, Tony Stark.
    • Amy's pregnancy in the "Upper Leadworth" dream hits a bit harder in season 6 when Amy actually is pregnant but, instead of being safe and happy with her husband in her home, Amy is instead a prisoner on Demon's Run, and her child is stolen immediately afterwards.
      • It hits even harder after season 7, where we learn that the aforementioned Demon's Run incident rendered her infertile, meaning that the tableau presented in the dream will never be reality for Amy and Rory.
  • Narm: The scene where Amy is Driven to Suicide, in the hope that "Upper Leadworth" is the dream and that she'll break out of it and be reunited with Rory by doing so, is undermined just a little by having her do so by driving a beaten-up panel van into her house at a speed that probably wouldn't have done much more than give her and the Doctor a mild concussion.
    • Then again, it is a dream after all. Dreams don't work on real-world logic, and anyone will tell you that something as basic as falling over in a dream can be enough to "kill" you. As such, a very minor car crash would definitely still be enough to wake them up if they were sure it was only a dream.
  • Special Effects Failure: In some scenes, such as when Amy gets off of the bench after waking up back in Upper Leadworth for the first time, the clearly fake underside of her pregnant belly is visible.
