  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: The Tax Prom that Gareth and Laurel attend in Episode 2 is a real annual event held in Washington, DC, hosted by a right-wing policy group called the Tax Foundation.
  • Anti-Climax: In the first season finale, Laurel and Gareth have finally gotten the queen bug to abandon Red's head. She races toward the crack under Red's office door, with Laurel and Gareth in hot pursuit... and is unceremoniously stepped on and squashed by Gary the intern, who is just bringing Red a smoothie. Given the comedic nature of the show, this was likely intentional.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In one episode, Red discredits Luke by unironically accusing him of caring more about the truth than about cute baby animals. This works very well as a comedic satire of post-truth politics, in which truth and facts are considered less important than emotional appeal. As 2016 (and especially the 2016 American presidential election) continued, many have feared that there has been a rise in post-truth, even being named Oxford's word of the year.
  • Memetic Mutation: "You Might Think" has become greatly associated with this show as the song that plays when someone is infected.
  • Paranoia Fuel:
    • Is that a line of ants scuttling across the sidewalk over there? Or could it be.... Cover your ears, folks!
    • Has a friend of yours recently started listening to The Cars? Is their favorite song "You Might Think"? Hmm...
  • Spiritual Successor: The closest thing to a They Live! TV series that's ever been made.
  • Squick:
    • The way part of the brain is pushed through the victim's ear and pops.
    • An in-universe example in "Taking on Water...", as Gareth is seriously squicked out at the image in his head of Laurel sleeping with Michael Moore. And it's made even longer and funnier in the recap song.
  • Too Good to Last: A hilarious satire of modern politics with a sci-fi twist and recap songs by Jonathan Coulton? Cancelled after only one season.
