YMMV / Belly (1998)

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Ox is probably the most popular character in the film.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The walking, talking Narm that is Rico becomes even funnier when you find out that Tyrin Turner deliberately tried to sabotage the film by dressing so ridiculously, as he was disappointed that the lead role went to DMX.
  • Narm:
    • A lot of the acting is pretty stilted at worst and hammy at best. DMX's performance however is praised by the raw energy put into it, making it some glorious Ham and Cheese.
    • Tyrin Turner, aka Caine, in a perm, wearing huge glasses, messily eating a banana. Yes, really. A deliberate case on his actor's part as seen above.
  • Narm Charm:
    • DMX's hammy performance is often seen as a highlight of this film, since he's clearly having the time of his life.
    • Tyrin Turner as the perm-and-glasses-wearing, banana-eating Rico is so ridiculous that it becomes hilarious.
  • Signature Scene:
    • The scene in Tommy's mansion, for its eerie aesthetic given by its minimalist color choice (everyone wearing black while the mansion is almost completely white save for black decor) complimented by the showing of Gummo on his TV.
    • The Nebraska scene, particularly for the appearance of Big Head Rico.
    • The shootout taking place in Lennox's mansion.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The entire movie has an absolutely beautiful aesthetic that's talked about fondly to this very day, and was praised as being ahead of its time. It makes the film look like one long music video, which makes sense considering the director, Hype Williams, is a music video director.
  • What the Hell, Costuming Department?: This was the general reaction to Rico, a highly-respected drug dealer who wears a perm and thick glasses. It turns out that Tyrin Turner intentionally showed up in a ridiculous outfit as a way to sabotage the movie as he wanted DMX's role.
