YMMV / Amityville II: The Possession

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Either Patricia is completely oblivious to what her brother is doing, or she knows, and is aroused.
  • Catharsis Factor: Seeing the Asshole Victim parents getting gunned down first can be quite satisfying to some viewers.
  • He Really Can Act: Who would've thought the usually easy going and amusingly rough-edged Burt Young can play such a despicably brutal Abusive Dad.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Anthony crosses this on-screen when he attempts to beat his small children with his belt out of blame for painting on the walls, slapping around his wife in the process for being in the way and later slapping his young daughter for a mess in the kitchen. Dolores crosses this when she sunk to her husband's low by slapping Patricia for committing Brother–Sister Incest. Due to this, the parents would not be missed when they are killed by Sonny.
  • Narm: The evil spirit possesses one of the characters causing his head to swell up like a beach ball and make him let out a very Richard Simmons-esque scream.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: This film has more in-common with the sleazy, stylized European horror films director Damiano Damiani and writer Dardano Sacchetti (of Lucio Fulci fame) hail from than the glossy, big-budget studio horror of the original film, down to it's second half being mockbuster of The Exorcist.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: While it's lower-budget and far sleazier than the original, many horror fans consider Amityville II: The Possession to be this; it's faster-paced and scarier than the first film, which many find boring.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: In a gray atmospheric film, a Dysfunctional Family led by Abusive Parents lives in haunted house where they are tormented by evil demons and eventually gets killed by their possessed teenage son. During his Demonic Possession, the son has Brother–Sister Incest with his sister, who on his birthday gets slapped by her mother for committing the incest sin. Unlike the first film, the Montellis who are haunted are the least sympathetic, especially the Asshole Victim parents. Then at the end of the film, despite exorcising the son, the priest gets possessed himself instead and ending indicated the haunting would never stop.
