Neptune Nonsense is a 1936 Van Beuren Studios cartoon starring Felix the Cat, and released by RKO as part of the Rainbow Parade series. It is the second of three Van Beuren cartoons starring Felix, and is part of the Classic Era of Felix.

Tropes:

  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: The mermaid dancer King Neptune flirts with has no bra, but has no nipples on her breasts either.
  • Cartoony Tail: It's hard to notice because it's so brief, but Felix's tail turns into an exclamation mark when he dogs are too sleepy to get up.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: King Neptune has a topless mermaid dancer by his side who flirts with him, much to his pleasure.
  • Large and in Charge: King Neptune is a few stories tall in height and is the ruler of the sea.
  • No Antagonist: The cartoon has no villain. The conflict is just Felix looking for a companion for his pet goldfish, and just gets tied up in a misunderstanding that gets him in trouble with the benevolent King Neptune.
  • Papa Wolf: When King Neptune believes Felix is trying to eat the fish he rules over, he has Felix arrested and angrily grills him, rhetorically asking how he would feel if he was captured and cooked alive like his subjects. He changes his tune when Felix reveals that he doesn't eat fish and is just looking for a companion for his pet goldfish.
  • Public Domain Animation
  • Public Domain Character: The mythical Neptune is present as a major character later in the cartoon.
  • Standard Snippet: When Felix is dancing around in the opening, he's whistling a tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel".
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: Felix is capable of breathing and talking underwater, per Rule of Funny.
  • Thinking Tic: Felix does his classic "Thinking Walk" when pondering how to cheer up his pet goldfish.
  • X-Ray Sparks: Felix takes on his appearance when he gets shocked by an electric eel.
