Poor Foofle can't seem to catch a break.

Foofle's Train Ride is a 1959 Terrytoons short directed by Dave Tendlar and supervised by Gene Deitch. It was one of the last cartoons to released under Deitch's supervision before he was fired.

Foofle takes a trip on the scenic excursion, but things go wrong for him throughout the whole short. He is tangled in a variety of situations, such as trying to open a window and causing it to break, trying to eat his lunch (which is reduced to an olive) and getting caught in luggage while trying to get a drink of water. When he gets off the train, his watch blew its face and gears off as he sighed in misery (thus ending the short).

The short contains examples of...

  • Born Unlucky: Foofle does things that go wrong for him. He tries to open a window to smell the fresh air, but gets broken. He tries to pull the emergency cord, but pulls it all the way to the point of going back in the train. He tries to get a drink of water, but gets water right through his clothes.
  • Limited Animation: The cartoon has stylized backgrounds and character designs, typical of the era.
  • Minimalist Cast: Foofle is the only character to appear in this short.
  • Thick-Line Animation: The character is drawn with thick lines.
  • The Voiceless: Averted with the announcer of the scenic excursion, provided by Bern Bernett.
  • Water Is Dry: Foofle gets showered by a waterfall as part of a visual gag. Later in the short, he is back to being dry.
