Blazing 8s is a Card Game created by Discord which can be accessed from the app's "Activities" menu within voice chat.
The game is based on Crazy Eights
, and in particular is heavily inspired by Uno. Thus, many of the tropes that apply there also apply here.
Blazing 8s contains examples of the following tropes:
- Adaptation Amalgamation: The use of 8 as a Literal Wild Card is borrowed from Crazy Eights, while most of the other special cards are borrowed from Uno. The appearance of the cards also combines the color-coding of Uno with the motifs of a standard 52-card deck.
- Adaptation Deviation: The "Draw Two" and "Wild Draw Four" cards from Uno have been replaced with "Quick Draw" which, instead of adding to a single player's hand, adds a single card each to all opponents' hands.
- Adaptation Distillation: The points system that is part of the usual Crazy Eights ruleset (and, for a long time, the official Uno ruleset) has been omitted, with each game only lasting a single round.
- Anti-Frustration Features: There's a button in the bottom right to sort the cards in your hand by color.
- Arbitrary Headcount Limit: Although the Activity itself allows up to eight Discord users to join, only five can actually play the game at a time.
- Call a Hit Point a "Smeerp": To go with the game's Wild West theme, the skip player card has been renamed to "Giddy Up", while another card is named "Quick Draw".
- Draw Extra Cards: If a player does not make a move within 30 seconds, a card will be added to their hand as a penalty.
- Midfight Weapon Exchange: Oscar's Swap Card, when played, switches a player's hand with that of the person next to them.
- Playing Card Motifs:
- The 1 card instead has an "A" on it, for "ace".note The Giddy Up, Wrong Way, and Quick Draw cards have a "J", "Q", and "K" on them respectively, standing for "jack", "queen", and "king".
- To help colorblind players, each color also has a suit symbol associated with it which appears on the card. Red is hearts (♥), yellow is diamonds (♦), green is clubs (♣), and blue is spades (♠).
- Timed Mission: Each player has 30 seconds to make a move.
- The Wild West: Both of the game's background options are desert-themed, with one of them featuring a saloon. Some of the special cards have also been given Wild West-themed names.
