Trivia / The Simpsons S3 E3 "When Flanders Failed"

Go To

  • Accidentally-Correct Writing: Mr. Burns is portrayed as left-handed in this episode, though many episodes before and since have shown him writing with his right. This was likely just a case of writers forgetting previous minutia, but as it happens, in the early 20th century (i.e. when Mr. Burns grew up), left-handedness was considered improper and lefties were forced to learn to write with their right hand anyways.
  • First Appearance: The "Just Stamp The Ticket" Man.
  • The Other Darrin: Akira from "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" returns, but is now voiced by Hank Azaria instead of George Takei.
  • Troubled Production: Much like "Some Enchanted Evening", this episode was actually delayed due to excess errors, and was originally produced for late Season 2. This happened because the episode was farmed out to, according to the DVD Commentary, a "company that no one had ever heard of; it was people that had just recently gotten opposable thumbs" (that said, the credits still list AKOM as the animators). Mike Reiss had said he will always remember the episode "that came back animated with a thousand mistakes in it and was just a complete and utter mess". They had attempted to clean up as much as possible, but errors still made it through. The delay meant it aired with the relatively crisper Season Three.
  • Write What You Know: The plot is based on someone George Meyer knew, who opened a left-handed store in real life. Unlike this episode, though, that person's store closed and no one gathered around to help him out.
