  • Development Hell: John Lee Hancock originally wrote the script in 1993, with Steven Spielberg directing, but Spielberg ended up dropping out due to finding the story too dark. A search for a new director was unsuccessful and the project sank into oblivion, until it was announced in 2019 that Hancock still planned to make the film with himself directing. Principal production was completed later that same year and the film was released in January 2021. Overall, it took twenty-six years for the movie to be made and twenty-eight years until it finally got a release date.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg was going to direct the film but he ended up passing on the script due to not wanting to work on a story with such dark and emotionally-draining content; considering he'd just finished working on Schindler's List it's understandable he preferred to do something more light-hearted.
    • Hancock stated that Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty and Danny DeVito all considered directing but ultimately all three turned the job down.
    • Hancock stated that Brandon Lee liked the script and asked for a part in the film; this was never to be both because of the film's production stalling but also due to Lee's tragic death on the set of The Crow (1994) the same year.
