  • Actor-Shared Background: Liam Hemsworth based his performance around his friends and relatives, particularly his grandfather. Hemsworth grew up playing footy, so he didn't need a stunt double to perform those scenes.
  • All-Star Cast: Includes Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving, as well as acclaimed Australian actors featuring Rebecca Gibney, Shane Jacobson, Sarah Snook and Shane Bourne.
  • California Doubling: Averted. The story is set in rural Australia, and was filmed in several rural towns in Victoria, Australia. When Rosalie Ham was pitching her story to producers, she was always worried that the story would be changed to a town in America, because it's easier to film there.
  • The Cast Show Off: Liam Hemsworth showed off his incredible footy skills.
  • Fake Australian: Kate Winslet is English, but her Australian accent is widely considered to be the most accurate Australian accent attempted by a non-Australian in film history.
  • Playing Against Type: Hugo Weaving playing a genuinely Nice Guy and a Wholesome Crossdresser? What year is it!?
    • Up to that point, Liam Hemsworth had only played Americans. This was his first film using his natural accent.
  • Promoted Fanboy: A lot of high-profile stars auditioned for the film, for a chance to act with Kate Winslet and Judy Davis, not to mention to work with acclaimed director Jocelyn Moorhouse.
  • Reality Subtext: Liam Hemsworth had a big crush on Kate Winslet for years, and adored working with her; that natural chemistry spilled into their characters.
