Trivia / Star Trek: The Next Generation S5E18 "Cause and Effect"

Go To

  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: In a fashion. Despite being the fifth season of TNG, this is the first time the phrase "eject the warp core" had ever been uttered in any Star Trek production. The nearest previous instance had been in "Yesterday's Enterprise", where the alternate-timeline Geordi said he might have to "dump the core".
  • Executive Meddling: Executive producer Rick Berman insisted that each time loop would have no reused footage. As a consequence, director Jonathan Frakes had the cameras film scenes from multiple angles to make every scene appear different. Eventually the film crew started including odd angles such as the overhead shot of the conference room in the final loop.
  • Prop Recycling: The USS Bozeman is a modified reuse of the Miranda-class USS Reliant model from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The production team had hoped to get Kirstie Alley to reprise her role as Lt. Saavik from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for a cameo appearance behind Kelsey Grammer (doubling as a Casting Gag due to both having had main character roles in Cheers) but could not due to scheduling conflicts. If this had come to pass, and the dates used in the final version were not changed, this would have caused a fairly epic Continuity Snarl, as 2278 is seven years before Star Trek II.
    • There were other design options for the Bozeman including a brand new design or even a TOS-era Constitution-class. Budget problems forced them to reuse the old Reliant model instead.
