Trivia / Star Trek: The Next Generation S5E19 "The First Duty"

  • Deleted Scene: In the script, the scene where Wesley tells Beverly to stop defending him is a bit longer and ends with a sad embrace, instead of her just looking slightly shocked.
  • Executive Veto:
    • Ron Moore's original script had Wesley stand by his friends (though in a way that would still allow him to make the "moral" choice). Michael Piller overruled him to change the ending to the aired version.
    • In the original script, the guilt was proven beyond a shadow of the doubt. Wesley confessing would just be him trying to get out of punishment.

    • Avoided in another instance. Ron Moore revealed that Rick Berman saw the doorknob and hinged door in Wesley's dorm room while reviewing the completed episode and promptly had a meltdown over a "real door" appearing on the show. Because he was unable to make any changes to the footage, Berman could only ask the sound editors to add an electronic beep whenever the doorknob was used. Moore had asked for real doors instead of the famous Star Trek sliding doors because he wanted Starfleet Academy to resemble the naval academy he had attended. (And it just happens to reinforce a reference to a 'bucket on door-top' gag in Star Trek: The Original Series).
