- Follow the Leader: Both games were created following the success of Super Mario Kart for the SNES, the game that revolutionized the Mascot Racer genre. The cover art◊ for Drift 2 in particular bears a striking resemblance to that of◊ SMK. Though these games were the first to compete with the Mario Kart series, they wouldn't be the last.
- Late Export for You: Drift 1 was initially a Japan-exclusive until it was ported to Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut in 2003 and then later included in Sonic Mega Collection Plus.
- Market-Based Title: Sonic Drift Racing for the sequel, but only on the European cover art.
- Sequel First: Drift 2 came out in the West years before the first game did, which wouldn't see a release outside of Japan until 2003 (where it was amongst the unlockable Game Gear titles in Sonic Adventure DX). Confusingly, the game is still titled Sonic Drift 2 in the West despite this (Europe would change the title to Sonic Drift Racing, but only on its cover art).
- What Could Have Been: A Flicky was going to be a playable character in the original game, but was later replaced by Amy.
