Trivia / Poor Things

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: While Bella was supposed to be dark-haired, Emma Stone ended up getting her hair dyed jet-black on accident. Yorgos Lanthimos actually liked it better because of the way it contrasted with her pale skin and decided to keep it as Bella's look.
  • Doing It for the Art: Emma Stone was insistent on doing the sex scenes in the movie, and was quick to defend them against critics denouncing them as gratuitous or exploitive. When Jimmy Kimmel made a crack about them at the Academy Awards, Stone was visibly angry.
  • Dueling Works: Became one against Barbie (2023) during Oscar season, when moviegoers realized that both films send artificially-created and sheltered women on journeys of self-discovery in a patriarchal society. Poor Things ended up winning Best Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling over Barbie, while Emma Stone won Best Actress in a race that didn't even nominate Margot Robbie.
  • Fake Brit: Out of every British character, only two - Prim (Vicki Pepperdine) and Madame Swiney (Kathryn Hunter) - are played by British actors.
  • Playing Against Type: Mark Ruffalo, typically known for playing serious-minded but sympathetic heroes, plays Duncan, a prissy, bad-tempered Manchild whose sole redeeming quality is his bedroom skill.
  • Production Posse: As with The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos worked with cinematographer Robbie Ryan, screenwriter Tony McNamara, and lead actress Emma Stone. This is also Lanthimos' fourth film with producer Ed Guiney and eighth film with editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis.
