Trivia / Monster Cereals

  • Approval of God: An unofficial concept for a retro-style Carmella Creeper cereal box earned a like from the owner of General Mills' Twitter page.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: A wiki vandal once gave Count Chocula's first name as "Alfred". By the time this was changed, multiple sources, from fact blogs to item descriptions, had taken this name as fact, and still continue to.
  • Follow the Leader:
    • The rivalry behind the characters, despite their cereals being from the same company, hearken back to the rivalries between Quaker Oats' Quisp and Quake. Unlike their inspiration, the Monsters didn't have as much of a "clear winner", and the rival cereals still remained in production, rather than one fully winning out.
    • General Mills themselves copied their own formula a year later in 1972 with the much shorter-lived Baron von Redberry and Sir Grapefellow, swapping out the monster motif with WWI military dogfighter pilots.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • Various commercials of the cereals have disappeared from the public, leaving snippets viewed elsewhere that cannot be found in full. One such example is an extended version of Boo Berry's debut commercial, with the extra pieces only found on the Food Network show Unwrapped. The full version of the commercial was eventually found in late July 2022.
    • The 2009 CD "Spooky Sounds from Count Chocula Castle", something of a revival of the Flexi-Discs of the '70s, is now a rare purchase, with secondhand lots of the CD starting in the 100s in prices a lot of times.
  • Milestone Celebration: In 2021, for the 50th anniversary of the brand, a special edition "Monster Mash" cereal was created, combining elements of all five of the monsters' cereals. A cover of the song "Monster Mash" is also tied to this release as well.
  • The Other Darrin: The monsters have had a few voice actor swaps through their lifespan:
    • Count Chocula was originally voiced by Jim Dukas. In 1978, he was replaced by Larry Kenney, who continues to voice the role.
    • Frankenberry was originally voiced by Bob McFadden. In 2009, he was replaced with Robb Pruitt.
    • Boo Berry was originally voiced by Paul Frees, with Peter Waldren voicing him for a few stints as well. In 2009, he was replaced with Chris Phillips.
  • The Other Marty: For the Flexi-Discs, Peter Waldren briefly replaced Paul Frees as Boo Berry's voice.
  • Uncredited Role: Due to the nature of the series being advertisements, voice actors are only discovered via interviews and word of mouth. As such, Fruit Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy's voice actors have never been tracked down.
