  • Actor-Inspired Element: Moore came up with the idea of Gracie having a lisp (inspired by videos of Mary Kay Letourneau). She said she wanted to emphasize Gracie's Womanchild personality and give Portman something distinctive to mimic.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Charles Melton gained forty pounds to gain the sort of "dad bod" a man like Joe might have.
  • Production Posse: This is Todd Haynes' fifth collaboration with Julianne Moore, following Safe (1995), Far from Heaven, I'm Not There, note  and Wonderstruck. It is also his third film to feature Cory Michael Smith, who appeared in Carol and Wonderstruck (where he also played Moore's son).
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The script was set in Maine, but the film was filmed and set in Savannah, Georgia. This is because the production needed a location that could look like late spring even though they were shooting in winter. This helped to create the film's Southern Gothic tone and Gracie's Southern Belle persona.
  • Shrug of God: In interviews, both Julianne Moore and writer Alex Mechanik have chosen not to say if Georgie's story about Gracie's older brothers molesting her was true. Moore said that she thinks her behavior wasn't "created out of a vacuum," but that Gracie lives in such a state-of-denial that even she wouldn't know the truth.
  • Underage Casting: Joe is thirty-six while Charles Melton is thirty-two.
