- The Cast Showoff: Maude afforded Bea Arthur numerous attempts to display her dancing and singing talents, even more so than Golden Girls. Maude was given to randomly breaking out in song on occasion, and a few episodes were even themed around musical telethons. The other cast members got in on it too, including Bill Macy and Adrienne Barbeau, who both had musical theater backgrounds (in Oh! Calcutta and Grease respectively).
- Fake American: Lethbridge-born Conrad Bain as Dr. Arthur Harmon.
- Making Use of the Twin: Conrad Bain’s twin brother Bonar Bain plays Arthur’s twin brother Arnold in “Vivian’s Surprise”.
- The Other Darrin:
- Maude's daughter Carol was played by Marcia Rodd in the All in the Family episode "Maude", a Poorly Disguised Pilot for the show, while Adrienne Barbeau took over the role for the actual series.
- Likewise, during the final season, Kraig Metzinger replaced Brian Morrison as Carol's son, Phillip.
- Recycled Script: The script for the final episode of the series was later reused for Mr. Dugan, with Cleavon Little in the title role as a fledgling black congressman. When Mr. Dugan faced criticism from actual black congressmen who screened the series and it failed to air, the script was reworked yet again into the short-lived series Hanging In, with Bill Macy (who played Walter on Maude) playing a novice university president. Actors Dennis Burkley, Barbara Rhoades, and Nedra Volz reprised their roles in all three shows.
- Star-Making Role: This series was Adrienne Barbeau's TV debut, as well as where she truly first got noticed.
