Trivia / Jane's Addiction

Go To

  • No-Hit Wonder: They were arguably one of the biggest bands of their era and have sold over four million in total album sales... yet in the US, their songs never hit the Top 40, and the highest any ever charted was "Just Because" at 72. "Mountain Song", "Jane Says", and "Been Caught Stealing" are still staples of rock radio, however.
  • Referenced by...: The English Progressive Rock band Oceansize named themselves after one of Jane's Addiction's songs (from Nothing's Shocking).
  • Short-Lived, Big Impact: They only released two studio albums during their initial incarnation, which remain the basis of their reputation to this day. However, they're regarded as an invaluable historical precursor to Nirvana (and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine actually compared Jane's Addiction's influence to Nirvana's), and bands ranging from The Smashing Pumpkins to tool to System of a Down to Interpol to Strapping Young Lad have been influenced by them.
  • Troubled Production: Nothing's Shocking was recorded during an intense turmoil between Perry Farrell and the other members, as his outrageously high royalty demands enraged the rest of the band and the label had to step in to make sure everything went smoothly. Not only that, but Farrell and bassist Eric Avery were at each others throats the whole time, after Farrell claimed that he caught Avery trying to hook up with his then-girlfriend. The conflicts plagued the band for a few years afterwards, and keep in mind this was their major label debut!
  • What Could Have Been: Strays began as a possible third album for the side project Porno for Pyros.
  • Working Title: "Then She Did..." was originally called "Then She Died..." Farrell ultimately removed one letter, presumably to make the title seem less morbid.
  • Write What You Know: "Had a Dad" was based on bassist Eric Avery discovering that he had a different biological father than the one he grew up with.
