Trivia / Honor of Kings

Go To

  • Follow the Leader: Inspired by League of Legends, though the story was rather interesting: Honor of Kings came to be because Tencent failed to get Riot Games to port League of Legends to mobile, they thought it would fail. So Tencent decides to give it a go themselves, inspired by League's engine, and succeeded, this game and Arena of Valor contributed to convincing Riot to finally create League of Legends Wild Rift
  • No Dub for You: The SNK heroes are not dubbed in Chinese. However, in the global version, they actually had English voice actors dub the SNK heroes.
  • No Export for You: This is a game that is extremely Chinese, requiring tons of Chinese knowledge to understand and appreciate the character's background. Tencent knows this, and so kept this game's form in China only, only Arena of Valor is released outside after they tweaked the designs to appeal more to the international crowd. Although somehow that changed when Level Infinite & TiMi announced an international version coming, with beta-testing starting at July 2022.
  • Role Reprise:
    • For the SNK Guest characters, the respective Japanese seiyuu (the current ones) are retained as opposed to the characters being dubbed in the Chinese language. Therefore, you'll still hear the likes of Ami Koshimizu and Mai Nakahara as Mai Shiranui and Nakoruru respectively. For some reason, they re-use their older version's death screams (by Akoya Sogi and Harumi Ikoma respectively), thus retaining some The Original Darrin elements.
    • For the global version, Casey Mongillo returns to voice some extra lines for Ata that's not in Arena of Valor (some previous voice clips are re-used, however). Zach Aguilar also returns to voice Allain's brand new voice set (due to his state of amnesia).
  • Screwed by the Network: One of the game's main selling points was the ability to play as historical/mythological figures from China. However, as the game grew so popular and Tencent wanted to let the children of their nation to enjoy their game (lowering their ratings), eventually Tencent received complaints from the Chinese government that they were spreading misinformation to their children with some of their outrageous designs to their historical figures. As a result, Tencent had to change the name of two figures (Jing Ke into Ah Ke, Pang Tong into Yuan Ge) and stopped giving out new historical figures as playable characters, after a certain point, they only released original characters (and even supposed historical characters like Tang Sanzang/Xuanzang had to be renamed into Jin Chan). While it didn't completely cancel the game, it has an effect to what was supposed to be their main selling point in terms of character design.
  • What Could Have Been: There are videos of certain beta versions that the modern-day SNK character collaboration was supposed to be Iori Yagami. The videos showed that Iori would have functioned similarly to what would become Mai Shiranui, but in a much more game-breaking fashion that TiMi decided to severely nerf the kit and use Mai instead (who is powerful but canonically in the SNK-verse not as strong as Iori)
