- Completely Different Title: In Sweden, the film was called "Sheriffen i Dodge City", meaning "The Sheriff of [literally in] Dodge City".
- Contractual Obligation Project: This film marked Burt Lancaster's final commitment under his contract with Producer Hal B. Wallis. The two never worked together again.
- Method Acting: Jo Van Fleet, who had trained at Actor's Studio, needed help to get into the character of the abused woman. She asked Kirk Douglas to hit her in the face. So he did. During the knife throwing sequence, she insisted to get a true knife instead of a dummy, so that she can get really shocked and feared on screen.
- No Stunt Double: Burt Lancaster did all his own stunts in the film, including the famous "running dive scene" at the beginning of the shootout at the OK Corral.
- One for the Money; One for the Art: Burt Lancaster agreed to do this film if he could star in The Rainmaker (1956), also produced by Hal B. Wallis.
- Wag the Director: It is said in Burt Lancaster's biography that he and John Sturges had open arguments on the set about the details concerning Earp's character.
- What Could Have Been: According to news pieces in January and February 1955, Hal B. Wallis was "hoping to" cast Humphrey Bogart or Richard Widmark as Doc Holliday and Barbara Stanwyck in another important role. John Sturges wanted Robert Mitchum for Doc.
