  • Executive Meddling: The managment at Taito really insisted that the development team put in the graphically intensive waterfall scene in stage 2, which lead to a lot of stressful measures on the developers' part.
  • In Memoriam: The game is dedicated to F2 System hardware engineer Katsujiro Fujimoto, who died during development in a traffic accident.
  • No Export for You: The Sega Saturn port wasn't released outside of Japan.
  • Troubled Production: Taito management was really insistent that the developers implement the waterfall special effects in stage 2. To make matters worse, said management refused to turn on the air conditioner in the building if only one employee was present. Takatsuna Senba, who was in charge of programming this scene and hapepned to be the sole poor sap working in the building, had to work on the scene in 40 C temperatures in his underwear with a wet towel around his head to keep cool, with the computers he was using sometimes overheating before he could save his changes.
  • What Could Have Been: A sequel to the game was planned to be released under the Working Title of Project Gun Frontier 2, being created by the same staff that made the first installment and it would've switched from a Vertical Scrolling Shooter to a Horizontal Scrolling Shooter. Taito's executives felt that the game's initial concept and storyline was too dark for it to be a sequel to the original Gun Frontier, so the staff decided to make it a new installment of the Darius series, with said planned game going under the new working title of Darius III, but after the staff realized they didn't want Darius to go down the Darker and Edgier route, they eventually decided to make it an original game titled Metal Black, though traces of the original plan still remain in the final game via the startup title/credits of Project Gun Frontier 2 being seen at the introduction.
