Trivia / Doctor Who S28 E4 "The Girl in the Fireplace"

Go To

  • Completely Different Title:
    • The French title is "La Cheminée des temps" (The Time Fireplace)
    • The Hungarian title is "Parókás intrikák" (Wigged Intrigues).
  • Deleted Scene: The Doctor mets the owner of the horse that got trapped on the spaceship. He is trying to find the horse and threatens to hurt it when he finds it for wandering off. The Doctor bemoans how he can't return the horse now that he knows what awaits, and returns to the ship to give the horse the "don't wander off" speech, effectively making him a companion.
  • Inspiration for the Work: During his research for Casanova, Russell T Davies became fascinated by Madame de Pompadour and wanted to include her in a story which also involved The Turk—a clockwork man who played chess around the same period and which was later revealed to be a hoax.
  • Prop Recycling: Sophia Myles' dress in the ballroom scene was originally worn by Helen Mirren in The Madness of King George.
  • Recycled Set: Some of the spaceship sets are redressed from Satellite Five. In particular, the room with the fireplace was adapted from the observation deck set.
  • Romance on the Set: David Tennant and Sophia Myles began dating soon after filming this episode.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the original script, the "mind meld" between the Doctor and Reinette was revealed as what attracts the clockwork robots to Reinette. Rose would offer Madame de Pompadour a gem that could erase the Doctor from her mind, but she refused because she didn’t want to forget about him.
    • Another aspect scrapped were out-of-order meetings between the Doctor and Reinette, such as how she recalled seeing him at her convent school, which he later visits.
    • Moffat had the clockwork robots originally hide their faces with wigs, but producer Phil Collinson objected for how limiting and unintentionally funny it would be, the androids were instead given carnival masks to wear.
    • The original plan was for Rose to be wearing a Gorgeous Period Dress as well when she spoke to Reinette, but it was decided that it was better to establish them as foils by keeping Rose in jeans and a T-shirt.
  • Working Title: "Madame de Pompadour", "Every Tick of My Heart" and "Reinette and the Lonely Angel".

  • All of the human guest actors in this episode were born in the same year (1980), a rarity for the series.
