- Author's Saving Throw: Russell T Davies brought back Annette Badland as Margaret Blaine after realising she had so few lines in her previous appearance.
- Completely Different Title:
- The French title is "L'Explosion de Cardiff" (The Cardiff Explosion)
- The Japanese title is "The Sorrowful Slitheen".
- Filming Location Cameo: Instead of pretending it's not in Cardiff, the episode is actually set in Cardiff, and features the TARDIS parked in front of a recognizable Cardiff landmark with another in the background.
- Prop Recycling: Margaret's egg was previously seen in "The End of the World".
- What Could Have Been: The episode was a replacement for a story called "The New Team" by Paul Abbott (the creator of Shameless), which would have been set in Pompeii. More importantly, it would have revealed that Rose was created by the Doctor to be "the perfect companion". This was never filmed because Abbott couldn't do rewrites and Davies disliked the dark twist about Rose. An entirely different Pompeii story would be made three series later, however.
- Working Title: Dining with Monsters. Russell T Davies joked that a much better name for this episode would be "What should we do with Margaret?"
- You Look Familiar: William Thomas (Mr. Cleaver) was Martin the undertaker in "Remembrance of the Daleks". This made him the first performer to appear in both the original and revived series. He later played Geraint Cooper in Torchwood.
