Trivia / Batman: The Animated Series E5 "Pretty Poison"

Go To

  • Deleted Scene: Quite a few moments and pieces of dialogue were omitted from the final episode:
    • Bullock's hilarious donut bit was supposed to happen thrice.
    • Bruce driving Pamela home himself, thus showing us her mansion.
    • A tracking shot of her empty home before we see the greenhouse.
    • Instead of "the works" Bruce's car phone call to Alfred was punctuated with "the whole enchilada."
    • Bullock's comical interrogation of the Rose Cafe staff ran a little longer.
    • At one point he mistakes their "chocolate moose" for an actual, cooked moose.
    • It's mentioned Pamela keeps a "bed of leaves" to sleep on in her nursery, implying that the mansion is primarily kept to maintain a facade of normality.
    • Her giant flytrap was named "Aloicious." She would've yelled this out, ordering it to devour Batman. In the final episode Ivy just silently commands it to do so with an angry nod.
    • The aforementioned, 3rd donut grab was going to happen during the episode climax.
    • Gordon would've gotten a call about the greenhouse fire & hurriedly drag Bullock away.
    • Isley introduces herself as Poison Ivy by saying "oh please, call me by my common botanical name..." Making a show of entering the scene to finish the sentence, silkily emerging from shadowy foliage, before making her way over to Batman with a rock of her hips. Ultimately it was truncated to her saying "oh please, call me Poison Ivy" without the entrance moment.
    • She also drank her antidote and shuddered.
    • After kissing Ivy, Batman's saliva would've made the ground smoke and sizzle on contact.
    • Instead of cutting his way free he'd spit into the flytrap's open maw, causing it to tear at itself from the inside out.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • A working title for this episode was "The Rose & The Thorn."
    • Originally the song "It's In His Kiss" by Betty Everett was going to be played while Isley undressed and Batman snuck into her greenhouse. Ultimately, for whatever reason, possibly rights issues, they instead used "Plant Muzak" a piece from Shirley Walker herself.
    • The script's description of Pam's costume is very comics based. Ultimately her outfit was simplified, making it easier to animate.
    • When visiting Dent in the hospital Pamela's outfit is described as black, very gothic with a veil, the script even specifying a resemblance to The Grim Reaper. Obviously, she was given more toned down attire in the episode.
    • To say that Ivy looked better in production drawings is quite an understatement. Blame Sunrise for the wonky, often squished frames as seen here. One can't help but envision a version of this done by the likes of TMS instead.
    • Storyboards reflected Bruce Timm's early, pre-Lynne Naylor collaboration design for Poison Ivy.
    • When Poison Ivy plants a deep Forceful Kiss on Batman he was supposed to make an Oh, Crap! face as seen here. In the final episode he squints his eyes angrily throughout their smooch.
    • Ivy's flytrap ensnaring Batman's thrashing head with its tendrils so she could more easily kiss him wasn't in the script, an aspect added during the storyboard phase of production.
    • Ivy's lipstick is mentioned to be red in coloration versus the final episode's pinker shade.
