Trivia / Alice Comedies

Go To

  • First Appearance: Alice Solves the Puzzle is notable for being the first appearance of Pete.
  • Follow the Leader: The cartoons were heavily deriative of Otto Messmer's Felix the Cat, Paul Terry's Aesop's Fables and Max Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell cartoons.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Of the 57 Alice shorts, 16 have been lost while only 20 have been officially released on DVD in different collections, leaving at least 21 shorts that have never been released on video. As of 2023, all are in the Public Domain in the United States, but those remaining shorts known to exist still haven't seen release, plus the DVD collections have been out of print for over a decade and are getting harder to find.
  • Marth Debuted in "Smash Bros.": Mickey Mouse's nemesis Pete got his start here, although as some sort of bear-mouse... thing.
    • This makes him the oldest still-active Disney character, beating out even Oswald the Lucky Rabbit by a couple of years.
    • He isn't the oldest recurring character either, though; Julius the Cat, who is a prominent character in this series but already existed in Disney's very first series, the Laugh-o-Grams, is. He is an Expy of Felix the Cat, and at the same time a prototype to both Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse. However, contrary to Pete, Julius the Cat's career did not resist time (he got a few non-speaking cameos in early Mickey Mouse short as "a black cat in the crowd", and that was that).
  • Missing Episode: 16 of the shorts are currently lost. Somewhat ironically, nearly all of these are from the series's final year (1927), while most of the oldest shorts (1923/4) survive.
  • No Budget: Each of the shorts were made for a paltry budget of $1,500 apiece.
  • The Other Darrin: Four different actresses played Alice throughout the series, due to either getting older or contract disputes.
    • In reality, there were really only three Alices as we know them. Dawn O'Day shows up for exactly one short.
