Trivia / AfterMASH

Go To

  • Executive Meddling: Resulting in the Retool mentioned on the main page.
  • Franchise Killer: Basically spelled the end of the M*A*S*H franchise outside of reruns of the original TV series, as no further attempts of adapting the novels or following up on the original TV show's storyline were ever produced, and M*A*S*H Spin-Off Trapper John, M.D. would end the following year. A pilot for another spinoff starring Radar (with Gary Burghoff reprising his role) would be pitched to CBS in 1984, but it was rejected by the network.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The cast of M*A*S*H took a vote on whether they wished for the show to end or continue. The majority voted for the show to end while Jamie Farr, Harry Morgan, and William Christopher voted to continue. Farr then started wondering what might happen to Klinger once he finally returned home and pitched a series where Klinger, Potter, and Mulcahy struggle adjust to civilian life and find each other again.
  • The Other Darrin: Barbara Townsend (Season 1) and Anne Pitoniak (Season 2) as Mildred Potter.
  • Screwed by the Network: Aside from what was mentioned in Retool, CBS dealt the series a mortal blow by placing it against The A-Team for Season 2. What really made it sting was that when CBS announced the scheduling change, they launched a marketing campaign featuring illustrations by Sanford Kossin of Klinger in a nurse's uniform, shaving off Mr. T's signature mohawk, theorizing that AfterMASH would take a large portion of The A-Team's audience. The theory, of course, was proven wrong. The exact opposite occurred, as AfterMASH's ratings plummeted to near the bottom of the television rankings and the show was canceled nine episodes into its second season, while The A-Team continued until 1986, with 97 episodes under its belt.
  • Technical Advisor: Just as he did for the main show, Dr. Walter D. Dishell served as this show's medical advisor to insure the scenes that take place in the O.R. were as accurate as possible.
