Tear Jerker / RoboCop (1987)

Go To

  • Bordering on Fridge Horror, the scene where the SWAT officers open fire on a seriously damaged Robocop, who by this point was self aware of his past life as Murphy. Considering his original death, then potentially another at the hands of officers that he had worked side by side with is almost as jarring to watch as his first death. What's more, we see that neither the SWAT officers opening fire nor their commander giving the order actually wants to do this.
  • There's the heart-rending terror of re-living his traumatic death by gunfire in his memories.
    • After Robocop's nightmares, Robocop begins exiting the police station, disturbed by his visions. Lewis confronts Robocop to assure him, "Murphy, it's you." This causes Robocop to walk backwards slowly in fright, in spite of his supposed amnesia.
  • After discovering his past identity as Murphy, Robocop returns to his former home and finds out that his wife and son have moved away and his neighbourhood is going to be turned in to a model housing development. He wanders around the house while memories of his family come back to him, and we see that he was a mild-mannered, well-mannered and kind-hearted everyman whose wife loved him and who was a hero to his son. He sees a monitor showing an advertisement for the new model homes and gets so angry at how his life was stolen from him that he puts his fist through it.

  • Just after Robocop finds out Alex Murphy was KIA and goes to his former home to investigate. His house is up for sale but there are still some mementos that trigger his memories. Peter Weller's magnificent acting (when ONLY HIS MOUTH IS VISIBLE), conveying the realization of what Murphy has lost and how his life is changed forever should at least make you swallow hard. And then as he storms through the house the music is a sorrowful rendition of "Rock Shop", AKA THE Robocop theme.
  • When Robocop is hooked into the police database and is looking up the status of Alex Murphy. Dark percussive music plays over the reveal like a nightmare-come-true:
    • What makes it even worse is when his life is flashing before his eyes, he has a Flashback to his wife angrily telling him "I really need to tell you something!" as if to imply that his life had its ugly side. Then when the memory plays out again, it's extended to include her smiling (because she was joking) and warmly saying "I love you."

  • Bob Morton's death at the hands of Boddicker sent by Dick Jones to eliminate any competition, especially when he was slowly and painfully tortured at first by being repeatedly shot in his legs with a silenced Deagle, following by Dick's taunting video before his death via explosion. While he was a Corrupt Corporate Executive, but compared to his co-workers he was probably not just only one of the few, but perhaps possibly the only one to have any redeeming qualities such as his creation of Robocop with sincere effort and his resurrection of Murphy, making him the Old Man's and the OCP's Morality Chain as after his death, they all become as bad as Dick Jones in the sequels. It's more saddening in recent times following the untimely death of Morton's actor Miguel Ferrer in January 2017, thirty years after playing the role in this film.
  • After Emil comes out of the toxic waste, half-melted and in excruciating pain, and begs Leon to kill him, Leon runs away in disgust.
  • When Robocop removes his helmet for the first time and stares sadly at his reflection, seeing for the first time the mechanical monster he's been turned into against his will. He asks Lewis what happened to his family and she tells him they started a new life without him, believing him to be dead.
Robocop: I can feel them ... but I can't remember them.
