Persona: City of Shadows is a Play-by-Post Game based on the Persona series of videogames made by Atlus.

The city of Kagamine is like most other Japanese cities out there. A historical site, Kagamine has undergone quite a massive development over the decade, and it is assumed that it will grow into a massive metropolitan someday, with its economic and population growth.

But there is something going on in the city of Kagamine. Rumors have started spreading about the existence of another Kagamine; decrepit and full with rust and grime. A bizarro version of Kagamine, you could call it. According to the rumors, one could enter this version of Kagamine after opening a strange app in their phone after getting the app mysteriously installed. In addition to that, this version of Kagamine is also populated by some kind of monstrous creatures called Shadows that will kill those who end up there, and whoever ends up in this place and killed by these monsters, they will be gone forever.

In order to survive the hellish world of Dark Kagamine, one must awaken to their Persona, and upon their awakening, they will be able to escape this dark world. Now armed with the knowledge of this world as well as their Persona, it is up to them to decide what to do next.

Persona: City of Shadows contains examples of:

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Unlike the games, the one who is in charge of the Velvet Room is no longer Igor, but a black woman named Mami Wata. Interestingly, Mami Wata is the name of a voodoo goddess or a water spirit venerated in West, Central, and Southern Africa, and in the African diaspora in the Americas. The reason for this change is still unknown.
  • City of Adventure: This trope is pretty much a staple in Persona series, and this time, the city in question is Kagamine.
  • Cool Mask: Just like in Persona 5, those who awakened their Personas will receive a mask in addition to their Otherworld Attires.
  • Eldritch Location: Dark Kagamine is the dark reflection of the real Kagamine city and can only be accessed through smartphone apps. Awakened Persona-users can freely enter and leave Dark Kagamine using Philemon App, a more user-friendly app, complete with instructions on how to use it.
  • Guardian Entity: Personas are considered to be this and can be summoned alongside their users in battles.
  • The Gunslinger: Upon awakening to their Personas, Persona-users receive Replica Firearms which they can use in Dark Kagamine and only in Dark Kagamine as they cannot use them in the real world.
  • Instant Costume Change: While they are no longer named Thief Outfit, Persona-users receive their Otherworld Attires which reflect their inner selves.
  • The Power of Friendship: Friendships, bonds and relationships are the most important things for Persona-users. As the matter of fact, those with unbreakable bonds may even gain more strength, receiving higher-tier powers.
  • Summon Magic: Personas are summoned this way.
