Recap / Young Sheldon S 5 E 21 White Trash Holy Rollers And Punching People

Go To

"White Trash, Holy Rollers and Punching People" is an episode of Young Sheldon that first aired May 12, 2022.

Mary and Pastor Rob (Dan Byrd) talk to each other in private about Georgie and Mandy's pregnancy, and Rob shows Mary that if someone else in the congregation got pregnant out of wedlock, then Mary would likely not have any sympathy for them. Later, in Sunday school, Missy punches a boy in the face for insulting Georgie. Pastor Jeff (Matt Hobby) talks to Mary and George about the incident, and tells them that it would be best if they leave the church.

Rob later comes to the Coopers' house to check on Mary. While they are praying together, Missy sees them. George later finds out about Rob visiting, and is angry at Mary because of how much time she spends with him.

All of the fighting in the family means that Sheldon is having trouble focusing on his studies. He complains to President Hagemeyer (Wendie Malick), and tells her all about the family's troubles. Hagemeyer then calls Mary, and points out that Sheldon always comes to her for help with his family, and never the other way around; this upsets Mary. Missy then comforts Mary.

Meanwhile, Mandy tells her parents about her pregnancy, and they tell her that she's on her own (even before she tells them about Georgie's age). Connie later accompanies Mandy to her first obstetrician appointment, and Georgie follows Connie, as her car is easy to spot. Connie tells Georgie to leave, but Mandy lets him stay, although she makes him wait in the waiting room.

Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Question/*Hypocrite Has a Point: When Mary complains about being shunned by the congregation, Pastor Rob asks how she would act if someone else was in the same situation. Mary just shuts up and eats from Rob's bag of donut holes (which she had rejected earlier).
  • Fight Unscene: The camera cuts straight to the title sequence just as Missy is about to punch the boy in the face.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Coach Wilkins and Principal Petersen are at the bar talking, and the subject changes to George. Camera reveals that George is sitting at the same table as them, and not happy about them ignoring him.
  • Photographic Memory: Sheldon remembers that on September 13, 1991, Hagemeyer told him that he could come to her with any problem, and he also remembers what kind of bagel she was eating as she said that.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": At the obstetrician's office with Mandy, Connie tells a couple at the waiting room to mind their own business before they even say a word.
  • Previously on…: Just a quick summary of the previous episode, in which Missy and Sheldon learned Georgie got Mandy pregnant.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Sheldon has to read in the car because he couldn't study at home due to all the fighting. Mary warns him about getting carsick, but Sheldon dismisses this. Minutes later, he's leaning behind the front seat, and the camera cuts to an outside shot as the sound of Sheldon throwing up.
  • With Friends Like These...: Almost the entire town, including Pastor Jeff, has turned their back on the Coopers.
