Recap / Young Justice S4 E15: Ebb Tide

Go To

Poseidonis is threatened by the actions of Child.

Tropes:

  • Bad Liar: Chameleon Boy and Saturn Girl confront Superman as Clark, making it clear they know his Secret Identity, but he insists on pretending they're wrong despite them seeing right through him. They humor him rather than pressing the point.
  • Bookends: The start of the episode has Saturn Girl and Chameleon Boy approach Superman for an urgent matter. At the end, they visit Kid Flash in the same manner.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Without the sun, Conner is unable to harness his full Kryptonian power. He at least holds his own against the strange Phantom Zone creature before he finds a way to avoid further fight against it.
  • Contrived Coincidence: In Orin's opinion, Arion saving them all in exact accordance with prophecy is just too perfect, and wonders if it was staged. By episode's end, he's fulfilled the second line and Orin is even more suspicious.
  • Enemy Mine: Orm puts aside his desire to kill Orin and joins forces with Mera to contain Child's pillar of fire and the red waters, but then immediately betrays Mera afterward.
  • Grimy Water: The pillar of fire releases a cloud of red water that kills anything it goes near. This becomes a problem when the Atlanteans have to divert magic just to stay alive, and when Blubber is caught outside the dome forcing Orin to rescue him.
  • Happy Place: Conner retreats to a mental image of himself fixing a bike with Sphere, Wolf, and M'gann to calm himself, which lets him escape the monster.
  • One Last Job: The Bio Ship intended to retire to Mars, but when the Legionnaires were stranded she decided to fly them to Earth herself to keep the timeline together. She later acts as a character witness in their meeting with Clark.
  • Parents as People: Kaldur might insist that they were Good Parents (and they certainly qualify as this now), but in his early childhood Calvin was often absent as he struggled to find his footing in Atlantis and Sha'lain'a had severe depression. They eventually got their act together, but by then Kaldur had already internalized the idea that he had to be the responsible one.
  • Promotion to Parent: Thanks to his father's struggles and his mother's depression, Kaldur acted like the adult in the room for his childhood and even picked up jobs to help. Both of them are deeply ashamed of this and urge Kaldur to put his own needs first for once in his life.
  • Sheathe Your Sword: When Conner realizes that the beast can harm him but passes right through the unconscious Phantom Girl, he realizes that his rage is allowing it to harm him. By calming himself, it passes right through him.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: This episode takes place during Child's global disaster spree, with Mera, Orm and Arion containing the pillar of fire she placed in Poseidonis, and Superman being called to Agra, India, to respond to a crisis while in Metropolis.
  • The Stinger: Much like Superman planning a "Justice League Reserves" system in "Og Htrof Dna Reuqnoc!", following the Chaos Lord Child's attack, Vandal Savage decides to retain the collected assets from Project Lifeboat on the Warworld in anticipation of the next inevitable crisis before prioritizing on the mysterious "Project Thrinos."
  • Stop Worshipping Me: Arion considers himself a failure and is not happy with everyone cheering him on and calling him the one true king.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball: When asking Superman to intervene seemingly has no effect, Chameleon Boy laments that he must have failed. Saturn Girl, however, suspects that they may simply be so far from their own timeline that changing the future has no effect on them, so there's no way to know if they've succeeded.
  • Trapped in the Past: With their time machine destroyed, the Legionnaires are stuck in the present and have to resort to finding alternate ways to repair their future.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Chameleon Boy and Saturn Girl reveal that they were hoping to save Superboy to prevent a crisis that would affect their future. Having seemingly failed, and with their time-orb destroyed, they turn to Superman to be at Happy Harbor at noon ten years from now, for reasons they refuse to specify given they're already mucking with the timeline far more than they should.
